As the second born child to community activists Khalil and Jannah Khalfani, Khalilah Khalfani wanted from an early age to have a career that made an impact on person’s lives. Her career aspiration was to be a teacher and an accountant, which would mimic the careers of her parents somewhat. Her parents impressed on her the importance of giving back to the community and the area she was raised in reinforced this. Her father told her at the start of her high school years that she will be attending college, however as the second of four children at the time, financially they could not afford it. He said her options were to obtain and academic or athletic scholarship (she was not athletic at all). She wanted to attend university abroad and thus soared academically in high school.
Grade 12 came so quickly and it was at a college fair where she chose the University of Tampa as the tertiary level institution that she wanted to attend. Unfortunately, she was only 16 and thus, unable to attend. She sat the entrance exam for the College of The Bahamas (now University of The Bahamas) and was successful. She did not let the disappointment of not being able to attend UT slow her though, her mantra became “delayed but not denied”. As she was completing her last semester at COB, she attended a college fair where she applied to the University of Tampa and gained admission “on the spot”. She was also able to obtain two scholarships in addition to grants that she researched and applied for. While attending UT she knew that the knowledge she had gained on applying for scholarships and grants etc. would be helpful to other young persons in similar financial circumstances and would offer assistance to others in this regard.
She obtained a B.Sc. in Computer Information Systems while working three jobs, including the ‘graveyard’ shift at the university’s computer lab (to be able to access a computer, to complete all assignments as she did not have a laptop, like the other students). Upon completion and starting a family, she attended the University of Miami, she obtained an MBA with a focus in international business. She began teaching at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute after gaining work experience in the private sector and has been teaching both adults and children for 20 plus years. She is a marker for the BGCSE and teaches Information Technology at a private institution.
